A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
