Adolescent Found Dead After False Allegations of Taking Ashes
A teenage youth was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The investigation heard how his parent got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Police Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that said items was never stolen in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed stolen remains generated social media comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that Kai had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the inquest learned, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The court heard his parents said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his questioning he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or failures of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
