Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
