Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
